Amazing Benefits of Ginger


Ginger is one of the world’s safest (and delicious) spices. It has nutrients and bioactive compounds that have strong advantages for the body and brain.


1.Ginger contains gingerol, a potent medicinal substance


Ginger is a Chinese-born flowering plant. It belongs to the family of Zingiberaceae and is closely associated with turmeric, cardamom, and galangal.

The part commonly used as a spice is the rhizome (underground part of the stem). It is often referred to as ginger root or just ginger. In various forms of traditional/alternative medicine, Ginger has a very long history of use. It has been used to help digestion, reduce nausea, and, to name a few, help combat flu and the common cold.

Ginger can be used as fresh, dried, powdered or oil or juice and can be added to processed foods and cosmetics at times. It is an ingredient that is very common in recipes. 

The unique fragrance and taste of ginger come from its natural oils, of which gingerol is the most important. Gingerol is the main bioactive compound for many of its medicinal properties in ginger. It has strong antimicrobial and antioxidant effects.


2. Ginger Can Treat Many forms of nausea, particularly morning sickness


Ginger seems to be very effective against nausea. For instance, its use as a remedy for sea disease has been a long history, and it can be as effective as prescription drugs.

In cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, ginger may also relieve nausea and vomiting after surgery. But when it comes to pregnancy-related nausea, like morning sickness, it may be the most effective.

Reviewed from 12 studies, including a total of 1,278 pregnant women, 1.1-1.5 ginger gum can substantially reduce nausea symptoms. However, in this study, ginger did not have any effect on vomiting episodes. 


3. Ginger may reduce pain and soreness in the muscles


It has been shown that ginger is effective against muscle pain caused by exercise. In one study of 2 g of ginger per day, muscle pain in people doing elbow exercises was significantly reduced for 11 days. Ginger has no immediate effect but can reduce the daily progression of muscle pain. The anti-inflammatory properties are thought to mediate these effects. 


4. The anti-inflammatory effects of osteoarthritis can help


The common health problem is osteoarthritis. It involves degenerating the body’s joints, leading to symptoms such as joint pain and rigidity. Those who took ginger extract had less pain and needed less pain medication in a controlled trial of 247 people with knee osteoarthritis.

Another study found that when applied topically, a combination of ginger, mastic, cinnamon, and sesame oil can reduce pain and rigidity in osteoarthritis patients. 


5. Ginger may significantly reduce blood sugar and improve risk factors for heart disease


This is a relatively new area of research, but ginger may have powerful anti-diabetic properties. Two grams of ginger powder per day lowered fasting blood sugar by 12 percent (11) in a recent 2015 study of 41 participants with type 2 diabetes. It also improved dramatically HbA1c (a marker for long-term blood sugar levels), resulting in a decrease of 10 percent over a 12-week period. The ApoB / ApoA-I ratio also decreased by 28 percent, and the markers for oxidized lipoproteins decreased by 23 percent. These are both major heart disease risk factors. 


6. Ginger can help manage chronic indigestion


Chronic indigestion (dyspepsia) in the upper part of the stomach is characterized by recurrent pain and discomfort. Delayed stomach emptying is believed to be a major driver of indigestion. Interestingly, in people with this condition, ginger has been shown to accelerate stomach emptying. Ginger reduced the time it took to empty the stomach from 16 to 12 minutes after eating soup. 1.2 grams of ginger powder before a meal accelerated stomach emptying by 50 percent in a study of 24 healthy individuals. 


7. Ginger Powder may reduce menstrual pain significantly


Menstrual pain is a pain felt in the female menstrual cycle, which is called dysmenorrhea. One of ginger’s traditional uses is to relieve pain, including menstrual pain. In one study, for the first 3 days of the menstrual period, 150 women were instructed to take 1 gram of ginger powder per day. Ginger succeeded in reducing pain as well as mefenamic acid and ibuprofen drugs. 


8. Ginger may lower the level of cholesterol


High LDL lipoprotein levels (“bad” cholesterol) are associated with an increased risk of heart disease. The foods you eat can have a strong impact on levels of LDL. In a 45-day study of 85 people with high cholesterol, in most cholesterol markers, 3 grams of ginger powder resulted in significant reductions. A study in hypothyroid rats in which ginger extract decreases LDL cholesterol in a similar way to the cholesterol-reduction drug atorvastatin is supported. Total cholesterol and blood triglycerides were also reduced in both studies. 


9. Ginger contains the cancer prevention substance


Cancer is a serious illness characterized by uncontrolled cell growth. Ginger extract has been studied for several forms of cancer as an alternative therapy. Six-Gingerol, a substance found in large amounts in raw ginger are the properties of anti-cancer. Two grams of ginger extract per day reduced the number of pro-inflammatory signaling molecules in the colon significantly in the study of 30 people. These findings have not, however, been confirmed by a follow-up study in people with a high risk of colon cancer. 


10. Ginger improves brain function and protects against the disease of Alzheimer’s


Ageing can be accelerated by oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. It is believed that they are among the key drivers of Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline associated with age. Some animal studies suggest that ginger’s antioxidants and bioactive compounds may inhibit inflammatory reactions in the brain. There is also some evidence that ginger can directly improve brain function. Ginger extract has been shown to improve reaction time and working memory in a study of 60 middle-aged women . Numerous animal studies also show that ginger can protect against age-related declines in brain function 


Natural ginger for most people will cause little or no known side effects. However, in some, high intake can exacerbate acid reflux symptoms, irritate the mouth, and cause diarrhea. Taking ginger as capsules can help to reduce heartburn risk.
