Does your teen often complain about chest pain? After meals, does she experience acute abdominal pain? You may want to read our post if you answered yes. She may suffer from a heartburn condition. Learn more about heartburn here and how it affects adolescents.

What Is Heartburn?

Heartburn in teens refers to chest pains that occur when the acid of the stomach reverts to the esophagus. Some common names of the condition are indigestion, acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux (GER). Frequent GER may result in GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). It can affect individuals of all ages.

Can adolescents get heartburn? Often adolescents suffer cardiovascular disease due to poor dietary habits. The pain usually decreases after a while or by antacids. Sickle cells can be very painful and inconvenient and can be a cause of concern when it occurs frequently. You risk serious complications for your teen if you ignore the heartburn that frequently occurs. The complications include oesophageal reduction, oesophageal ulcers, sore throats, laryngitis, breathing difficulties, wheezing, and toxicity.

Causes Of Heartburn In Teens:

The esophagus makes the movement of food consumed in the stomach easier. The lower opening is only open during the movement. The lower end of the esophagus remains shut at all other times, which prevents the backing up of stomach acid into the throat. But when, for some reason, the lower part of the esophagus becomes weak or cannot close, the acid may rise back into the esophagus, leading to heartburn for adolescents.

Due to obesity, sudden weight gain, smoking, asthma, certain medications, poor dietary habits, esophageal surgery or cerebral palsy, the lower esophagus may become weak in adolescents. A proper medical checkup is very important to find the real cause of heartburn in your teen.

Most often, heartburn diagnosis is based solely on symptoms as they are characteristic. In some cases, doctors may perform some tests to rule out other conditions, such as those relating to the heart or esophagus, if the symptoms do not diminish with heartburn.
