Pride Turban: Sikh Bisexual Man Wore A Rainbow Turban

The Best Dastaar Ever

A Sikh man living in the U.S. has gone viral to celebrate the Pride month 2019 for his rainbow-colored turban that kicked off on June 1.

The month-long celebration for the global LGBTQIA+ community is a vibrant expression of pride and is characterized by extravagant and colorful parades. Taking a cue from the exuberance, to celebrate his queer identity, Jiwandeep Kohli, a neurosurgeon who bakes on TV news shows on the side, decided to add a rainbow dash to his daily look.

Kohli sported a rainbow-colored turban, a religious symbol for Sikhs, in a photo posted on Twitter, and declared himself a proud bisexual. “I am proud to be a bisexual bearded baking brain scientist. I feel lucky to be able to express all these aspects of my identity, and I will continue to work to ensure the same freedom for others,” he wrote.

The image on Twitter has over 35,000 likes. Many have showered Kohli with praise and solidarity on Twitter. Some even praised Kohli for his perfect home dying ability.

Jiwandeep had brought the turban to San Diego Pride last year, according to Buzzfeed news, but posted the picture again to share the love.

“I saw a photo of another Sikh man at a parade of pride in his turban a few years ago,” he said. “I was looking at that, and I realized that the way I tie mine to make a rainbow had the exact number of layers.”
